The Great Acting Blog: “Discover Extraordinary Riches For Your Work”
Much of the actor’s career is out of his control, but plenty of it is within his control too. It’s within his control to practice a concrete technique of acting so intensely that it becomes internalised, so that it can be called upon at a moment’s notice, so that onlookers will think he is creating miracles.
To get to this level however, means giving something of yourself to your work, it does not mean going through the motions in some acting class or drama school. It means sacrifices of time, energy and comfort, going beyond the normal, expected levels of effort. It means going to a place few others are willing to go, once there however, you will discover extraordinary riches for your work, riches that most of your peers will never possess. They may envy you as a consequence, thinking you obtained them by luck, not realising that you actually won them through hard work. However, the audience will not envy you, they will be grateful and delighted to be able to enjoy the fruits of your effort: performances of truth, elegance and excellence, made by the hand of an artist.
