The Great Acting Blog: “Create Meaning, Purpose And Fulfilment”

If you only want to turn-out humdrum work, you’ll have to scream louder to make yourself heard amid the cacophony, but every so often you will get what you want. It’s easy in one sense because you’re dishing out something you don’t care about, the stakes aren’t particularly high, you’re just playing a numbers game – like the actor who just goes on endless auditions, hoping to land a role through sheer mathematics (eventually he’ll get something, right?). It’s a pretty tedious game, not very fulfilling, and I’m certain it’s not why most of us decided to become artists in the first place.

The alternative is to make the commitment, and strive to create something specific and extraordinary, something that certain people will connect powerfully with. It’s a difficult and complex approach because it means penetrating your art more deeply. In another sense though, it’s easier, because you’re creating something people will be drawn to, something they will want to experience or be a part of. It’s an approach which raises the stakes but also creates meaning and purpose and a sense of fulfilment.
