The Great Acting Blog: “Create A Mental Ritual Before You Act The Scene…”

… This will enable you to organise your mind and your energy, and focus entirely on the task ahead, ensuring that everything you do works for your performance. This is all part of having a controllable technique that stands up under pressure and enables you to unlock your creativity.

Having a ritual will help you make that switch between being in the wings and being on stage, or waiting on set and going in front of camera.

Without such a pre-scene process, your work may be haphazard, your technique maybe be unreliable, you may not always be confident of finding the scene, of connecting to it, and so your results may be variable and your confidence not always what it might be. It’s about fulfilling your potential.

Your ritual shouldn’t be something long and complex, it shouldn’t be another challenging task in itself. No. It should be simple and easy and under your control, such as reminding yourself of your action, of what you need to do in the scene.

Create a simple, mental ritual then, that you’ll go through before you’re about to do the scene, and so ensure that you’re properly focussed, confident, creative, and well placed to do your best work.
