The Great Acting Blog: “Collaborate With Actor-Artists To Make Your Work Stronger”

If you’re trying to get a truly artistic project off the ground, then finding actors with a similar culture to your own, a similar outlook, a feel for a similar aesthetic, can be as important as technical ability. Certainly this is true if you want to create strong, lasting creative partnerships.

If you’re production however, is simply copying a formula for what’s already popular because it’s safe, then it won’t unsettle people, they’ll feel secure and will go along with you. Therefore, you can use the normal, industrial processes to find your actors, it will not matter if they are indifferent to your project.

However, if you’re trying to create a work of art, there is no formula, you’re taking a step into the unknown, you don’t know what the results will be and this frightens people. That’s why those working alongside you need to be artists too, they’re willing to take a chance because it’s worth it for them, their desire to do extraordinary work trumps their fear.

If these people are not readily available, then you will need to find them. And if you can’t find them, then you need to identify those who have the potential to be artists, who have the desire, and pass on your culture and your point of view to them, and help them to see the merits of what it is you are undertaking.

This effort to reach out, is difficult and time consuming, we make ourselves vulnerable and it may not work as potently as we would like. However, it can lead to the formation of some highly productive and effective collaborations, helping you to realise your production, and this makes you and the culture you are creating, stronger for the long term.
